Homework: Worksheet: Front side - Complete Bubble Map using the lasting contributions of the Roman Empire. Back side - Choose one contribution. Draw a picture of it and explain what it was and why you think it was an important lasting contribution.

Homework: Lasting Contributions of the Roman Empire. Front Side

Homework: Back Side The Twelve Tables The Twelve Tables was the law code that was written by the Roman government. It was based on the idea that good government came from the rule of law and that all citizens are equal under the law. I believe it is important because it is the foundation for a lot of modern law codes, including the United States.

Romans engineered concrete arches, domes, bridges and aqueducts.

Concrete - Romans invented concrete and used to build their structures. Roads - Romans had over 50,000 miles of roads. Used to transport goods/assisted the army to move easily. Linked the empire together. Aqueducts - Used to transport water to cities and latifundia. *very modern water supply system* ENGINEERING

LANGUAGE Roman language (Latin) provided a common language that could be spoken and understood throughout the empire. Romance Languages - French, Spanish, Romanian. Some English words come from Latin, especially words that have to do with animal species and body anatomy. Examples: Canis lupus familiaris (Dog) Humerus (Arm Bone) Examples of the types of words we use that come from Latin: alias, alibi, camera, caper, extra, focus, media, minister, omnibus, radius, and recipe.

Having and following the law is a very important part of a successful civilization. 1)What are some laws that are included in the Twelve Tables that we have in our legal system today? What are some laws that aren't? 2)What would be some issues that might occur if the Twelve Tables were to be enforced in our society?

Examples of Christianity in the time of Jesus: Christian Persecution in Rome: a)Christians were thrown to lions in the Colosseum for entertainment. b)Were put on trail and crucified for not believing in Roman gods. Christianity under the rule of Constantine: Constantine is Rome's first Christian emperor. Made Christianity acceptable in the Roman Empire. During his reign Christianity spread rapidly.

Important Things to Remember: *The 50,000 miles of road that Rome left behind are a great feat of engineering. *English is not a Romance Language but uses many Latin root words. *Romans invented concrete, a building material used in their roads. *The Colosseum is an example of great architecture. *Rome left a great legacy or heritage, for Western civilization.

History is how we record time. Calendars are a way for us to record history and also plan for the future. 1)How is the Julian Calendar similar to the calendar that we use today? 2)Why is the change that Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 so important to properly being properly in tune with the seasons?
