Studies in the Book of Acts Acts 5 Review Dr. Ronald C. Hill, Sr. November 2, 2011
2
A. There are several main events that occurred in Chapter 5
3
Acts 5:1-11 1. But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
4
Acts 5:1-11 2. And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
5
Acts 5:1-11 3.But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
6
Acts 5:1-11 4.Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
7
Acts 5:1-11 5. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
8
Acts 5:1-11 6. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
9
Acts 5:1-11 7. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in
10
Acts 5:1-11 8. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
11
Acts 5:1-11 9. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
12
Acts 5:1-11 10. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
13
Acts 5:1-11 11. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
14
B1. A husband and wife by the names of Ananias and Sapphira conspired together to lie about the amount of money they had given. Their names did mean grace and beauty, but their names did not fit their conduct.
15
B2. The punishment was death. They both fell dead after they lied to the man of God. This caused great fear and awe to come upon the whole church and all who heard about it.
16
C1. Then in Acts 5:12-16 Many signs and wonders were performed by God through the hands of the Apostles.
17
Acts 5:12-16 12. And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
18
Acts 5:12-16 13. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
19
Acts 5:12-16 14. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
20
Acts 5:12-16 15. Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
21
Acts 5:12-16 16. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
22
C2. This caused the fellowship to grow in numbers.
23
C3. The anointing of the Holy Spirit was so great until they went so far to bring out their sick and laid them on beds and couches on the streets. They waited for Apostle Peter’s shadow to pass by them.
24
C4. The move of the Holy Spirit also caused crowds to gather from the cities round about Jerusalem. They brought with them people that were sick in their bodies and others that were being harassed and troubled by unclean spirits. And everyone was healed and delivered.
25
D1. Then is Acts 5:17, 18 We observe the second persecution and the second arrest of the Apostles. The first persecution took place in Acts 4:1-3
26
Acts 5:17,18 17. Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
27
Acts 5:17,18 18. And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
28
E. In chapter 5:19,20 We find the miraculous escape of the Apostles from prison.
29
Acts 5:19,20 19. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,
30
Acts 5:19,20 20. Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
31
Acts 5:21-24 21. And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
32
Acts 5:21-24 22.But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned and told,
33
Acts 5:21-24 23. Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.
34
Acts 5:21-24 24. Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
35
F1. The Apostles obeyed the Lord and entered into the temple and taught and preached the Gospel.
36
F2. The high priest and the council had come together and they sent to the prison to bring the Apostles to trial.
37
Acts 5:25-28 25Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.
38
Acts 5:25-28 26. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.
39
Acts 5:25-28 27. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,
40
Acts 5:25-28 28. Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
41
G. In these verses we observed the third arrest of the Apostles and their second trial.
42
Acts 5:29-32 29Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
43
Acts 5:29-32 30. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
44
Acts 5:29-32 31. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
45
Acts 5:29-32 32. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
46
H. The Apostles presents a defense as to why they choice to obey God in spite of being arrested.
47
Acts 5:33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
48
Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
49
I1. When Peter preached his first Gospel message in Acts 2:37 the Bible says they were pricked in their heart, and this caused them to ask what they could do to change their lives for the better
50
I2. The Greek word for prick is “Katanusso” and it means to be pricked to the quick or to agitate violently. In Acts 2:37 they were stung to the heart with remorse and a desire for repentance. The Greek word for cut to or through the heart is “Diapriomai”. It means to saw asunder. The word they heard did not cause them to be remorseful rather they were filled with spite, malice, and revenge against the Apostles. They so hated them until they decided to kill them. They hated the message and this led them to hate the messengers.
51
J1. The Warning of Gamaliel
52
Acts 5:34-39 34Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
53
Acts 5:34-39 35. And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
54
Acts 5:34-39 36. For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.
55
Acts 5:34-39 37. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
56
Acts 5:34-39 38. And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
57
Acts 5:34-39 39. But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
58
J2. Gamaliel was one of the most celebrated and honored Jewish rabbis. He was the main teacher of Saul of Tarsus. Paul spoke of him in Acts 22:3
59
Acts 22:3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
60
J3. The advice given by Gamaliel does not indicate that he was a Christian or that he was even Pro-Christian. It was simply worldly wisdom that he spoke. He was speaking from a standpoint of observing what had happen in the past and he spoke common sense.
61
J4. Gamaliel understood what we in the church had better come to understand when people say they are of God and are doing the work of God. We don’t need to seek to pull them down. If what they are doing is not of God it will soon fade out. If it is false God will expose it. On the other hand if the movement is of God you will not be able to overthrow it. They would be found in the awkward position of fighting against God; which we all know is a losing battle.
62
K. When you are doing something you know is of God don’t get into fighting people. All you need to do is to continue to live a holy lifestyle love everyone including your enemies, follow the instruction of the Holy Spirit and you cannot and will not be defeated.
63
Acts 5:40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
64
L. The beating of the Apostles was senseless and unrighteous. This was an unreasonable reaction of bigoted hearts that hated the truth of God’s word.
65
Acts 5:41,42 41And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
66
Acts 5:41,42 42. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
67
L1. The beating inflicted on the Apostles had two unexpected results. First, it caused them deep joy that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor and disgrace on the behalf of the name of Jesus. Second, it sent them forth with renewed zeal and persistence to preach and teach Jesus as the Christ. They not only were preaching Jesus in the temple they also were sharing the Gospel door- to-door.
68
L2. So once again satan outwitted himself. Had he known what beating those Apostles would cause them to do in their ministries he no doubt would have never done it.
69
M. If what we are doing and saying for God and His word and work is not causing the religious people to hate us and speak against us we are not truly doing the will of God. We are not to go out of our way to cause trouble with people but if we preach the truth of God’s word we will cause the religious leaders and the people who follow them to hate us.
70
“I challenge you to be bold. Live a holy life and allow God to use you. Stand up for the truth. Don’t accept things the way they are if you know the way things are going does not agree with the word of God. We must push and challenge ourselves and those around us to pursue the fullness of God and to see the Glory of God moving in the earth. Don’t Settle for Less.
