KEYS T RECYCLE RIGHT Simone Cunningham, (Formally)Zero Waste SA (ZWSA)
3
Who did we tag? 300 households across two areas where contamination was high and participation rates of food recycling are low 75 households in the new subdivision of Two Wells 230 households around the centre of Mallala Three collections across six weeks with a fact sheet dropped at each household in the fortnight before tagging, a total of four visits to each household.
14
What were the results Reduction in contamination of recycling bins of 36%. Reduction in contamination of green organics bins of 71%. An increase in participation of recycling food scraps of 37%.
15
And even the good got better… Two Wells: both bins correct an increase of 69%. Mallala: both bins correct an increase by 75%. And where there was contamination the levels decreased - 85% decrease in presentation of grossly contaminated recycling bins and gross contamination was eliminated from green organics.

Other useful information Most likely contaminants: soft plastics, and containers and bottles with lids on. Presentation rates of recycling bins decreased across the trial from 84% to 75% at the end of the trial. … meaning? –Recycling bins are not at capacity –No need for larger bins –No need to increase collection frequency.
20
How does this compare? Holdfast Bay contamination of recycling decreased by up to 66% recycling increased by as much as 43% an increase in participation of recycling food scraps of 50%. Naracoorte: reduction in recycling bins presented with contamination by 55%. the incidence of lids being left on bottles and containers reduced by 64%. reduction in contamination of waste bins 65%. So what could be done to match these result?
21
1: More ONGOING education Introduce a program of ongoing education: decent calendars bin stickers fact sheets advertising A-Z Disposal Guide presentations to community and school groups.
22
2. Incentives and enforcements Include incentives provides greater promotion and PR encourage wider community improvement in recycling. Include enforcement for continued or gross contamination levels delay collection of bins remove services
23
3. Create a buzz Increase local media activity through media releases and advertising Recruit ambassadors who provide tips on how they recycle at home through Council magazines and website Publish who your winners are! And the results of your trials…. Compare areas
