MCB105 Section 5

Announcements Next week is spring break No office hours (email me if you have questions) Final project proposal outline: Sunday, April 5 (counts towards section participation grade) Pre-vetting of topic/idea with respective TFs

Format: Brief background and introduction (1 paragraph) What is the “open question” you want to address? Specific aims (2-3 short paragraphs) – How do you plan to address this question? In a normal grant proposal, there are usually 2-3 specific aims (summarize each aim in 1 sentence, followed by a paragraph elaborating on the aim).

Where are ITDs first calculated?

Delay lines and coincidence detection in nucleus laminaris

This learning is adaptive because it causes these owls to orient to sounds so that they see the source of the sound through the prisms.

R23 prisms Which direction do the visual receptive fields shift? Which direction do the auditory receptive fields/ITD tuning shift, after some time? (i.e. adaptive direction) What is actually changing in the brain?

Auditory plasticity (aligning with visual maps is fast), but visuomotor adaptation is slow! *unlike in humans Some systems are more plastic than others

What is the important question the author wants to address in this paper?

Describe the two different groups of owls he was comparing What/when is the sensitive period?

Fig 1

Fig 2

Fig 3A

Fig 3B

Fig 4

Mechanistic explanations for this limitation to plasticity?

Normal r m l c ICC OT ICX After Prism Experience ICC OT ICX Other ways to overcome this limitation?

What was the puzzle this paper was trying to address?

Jan 2002 What was their hypothesis for lack of visual responses in ICX?

Fig 1A

Fig 1B Describe the experimental protocol using this figure

Fig 1D Why is the delay important?

Fig 2A

What two hypotheses did they want to distinguish next?

Fig 2B

Fig 3A-B

What was the next question the authors asked, and how did they go about answering it? What is the difference between visual and auditory responses in the ICX?

Fig 4A-D

Fig 4E-F

Fig 4G-H

How could this differential effect of ITD on visual responses underlie plasticity? (i.e. how could it act as an instructive signal?)

Why is there a gate in the first place? What other hypothetical experiments could be done to further test this hypothesis?

EXTRA SLIDES

GABA neurons in the ICX also involved in plasticity

L23 prisms
