Skin Cancer Basal Cell Carcinoma- most common type o Affects cells of stratum basale o Has varied appearance (open sores-bleeding, oozing, crusting or reddish patches, having shiny/pearly/translucent bumps or areas of shiny/taut skin) o Removal or destruction of tumor cures most cases
3
Skin Cancer (cont.) Squamous Cell Carcinoma- 2 nd most common type o Can start out as a small, scaly, crusty bump- actinic keratosis- that arises on skin surface (untreated, can 2%-5% progress to this type) o Affects cells in stratum spinosum, can appear wart-like and persist as a scaly red patch, open sore or elevated growth with a central depression- lesion may bleed o Removal/destruction of tumor cures most cases
4
Skin Cancer (cont.) Melanoma- least common but most deadly o Accounts for at least 77% of skin cancer deaths in US o Arise in melanocytes, so are mostly brown or black but can sometimes stop producing melanin and appear skin-colored, pink, red, or purple o 40% develop in existing moles o Treatment when confined to epidermis is almost always successful, but it’s difficult to treat when it invades dermis and metastasizes to other body parts and can be deadly o ABCDE Rule is used to apply signs to skin changes
5
Melanoma ABCDE Rule A- assymetry: one side of lesion does not match the other B- border: irregular- ragged, notched, blurred C- color: uneven pigmentation D- diameter: greater than 6 mm E- evolving: changes shape, elevation, or color; lesion may bleed, crust, itch, become tender
6
Mini-Poster: Due EoP on MON Title of skin cancer or ABCDE rule= 1” tall letters Color or colored picture for cancers and at least coloring added to ABCDE rule poster General information by author (or from PPT) included. New and/or updated facts (min. of 2) added from current research (include source!)
