1 Objective: Define Author’s Purpose and Identify the Author’s Purpose in a given text.

2 What is Author’s Purpose? It is the reason why an author writes a story We all have reasons why we do the things we do. Authors write to inform, persuade, entertain, or describe situations to their readers.

3 Authors write for a reason. This reason may be to: ___________________

4 Authors entertain readers by: Funny words and events Exciting or familiar events

5 When author’s write to entertain, they write stories to make you laugh, cry, or to enjoy. Examples: Spiderman, Brave, Batman, Movies

6 Sally bought some apples from a farmer down the road. She took some home for dinner for her and her pet toad. How is the author trying to entertain you?

7 Once upon a time there was a little boy who loved to play soccer. He would run as fast as he could to the ball, but every time he got there and tried to kick it he would miss. He started to think he wasn't very good at soccer, but he didn't give up. His hard work paid off and one day he scored the winning goal for his team. How is the author trying to entertain you?

8 Authors persuade readers by: Including their opinions Including facts to support their opinions

9 Writing to Persuade- When author’s write to persuade, they want to make you agree with them about a certain topic. Example: Magazines, Letters, Newspapers, commercials, etc.

10 Writing to Persuade- Brushy brooms are the best you can buy! Everyone must have one in their homes. Whether you are sweeping indoors or outdoors, you will do a better job with a Brushy broom! What is the author trying to persuade you to do?

11 Art class should be longer than all other specials. There never seems to be enough time to get our pictures done. If we had more time in art class everyone would do a better job on their pictures and we would learn more. Art is very important and we should have the time we need to finish a project. What is the author trying to persuade you to do?

12 Authors explain things to readers by: Explaining how to do something Explaining the steps in a process

13 Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is really easy. First, gather your ingredients (bread, peanut butter, jelly) and two knives. Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread and your jelly on the other. Put the bread together and enjoy! What is the author describing in the story?

14 Authors describe things to readers by: Giving “sensory” details (touch, taste, smell, see, hear) NOTE: “describe” and “explain” are often confused.

15 Writing to Describe- When author’s write to describe, they talk about the way an object looks, tastes, smells, feels, or what it does.

16 The ocean water glitters for as far as the eye can see. The soft crash of waves and smell of salt water have a calming affect. Paradise Beach is a quiet place where you can watch wildlife and relax.

Thomas was not making honor roll this time and he was not going to be allowed to do all the things he wanted to do. Poor Thomas! He would just have to study harder and get back on the honor roll.
