Goal Strategy Tactic Goal: What is the change we trying to achieve? Strategy: a discussion that answers these questions: 1.Who are we? Values, mission, constituency, leaders etc. 2.What do we want to accomplish? 3.What are the means at our disposal? 4.What will our major course of action be? Tactic: A component of our course of action. Must align with Strategy. Landscape : Underlying Cultural Assumptions that limit us.

ALL SUCCESSFUL ACTIONS CONSIDER What is our Goal? What are we trying to achieve? Where is the Power? What/who do we need to move to get what we want? Who is our Audience? Who are we speaking to? What is our Message? What are we saying? How are we saying it? What is our tone?

SUCCESSFUL ACTIONS: Know their Goal, Know where the power is, Know their audience, Tailor their message. Control the frame, Increase participation through process, Keep it Simple, Anticipate the Opposition’s response, Manage the mood, Make it real, Choreograph the exit, Broadcast the story.

SCENARIOS 1) The school board announces it will be voting on whether or not to close a school in a working class neighborhood (schools in affluent areas are not on the agenda) 2) A respected community activist is killed by a stray bullet in her neighborhood 3) A bad local politician is going to campaign with a bad national politician in your neighborhood 4) Non-union library workers have decided to start a campaign to organize a union and want to educate the community
