2 Objective, Agenda, & Homework Objective: Students will identify and annotate rhetorical devices in two speeches. Agenda: – Latin Roots Recap – Speech Sign-ups (Absent) – Highlight JFK Speech – Highlight MLK Speech Homework: Latin roots 61-65 sheet is due next Wednesday.

3 Latin Roots 56-60 Due Yesterday! Be sure your name is on your assignment. Also be sure that you have the roots in your notebook. – 56: cid, cis = cut, kill – 57: san = sound, healthy – 58: domin, domit = master, tame – 59: dei, div = God/gods – 60: laud = praise 61-65 Due Wednesday, May 6! – It CANNOT be late. Copy the roots into your notebook: – 61: glob = ball – 62: sol = sun – 63: lun = moon – 64: port = carry – 65: aqua = water

4 Q4 Speech Sign-ups Today, we will sign up for your speech times that are during the week of May 11 (5/14, 5/15, 5/18, 5/19, 5/21, & 5/22).

5 Rhetorical Devices Repetition: a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for effect or emphasis – Parallel Structure – Anaphora Allusion: an indirect reference to another literary work or to a famous person, place, or event Imagery: descriptive words or phrases that recreate sensory experiences for the reader using one or more of the five senses Metaphor: a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common Rhetorical Question: a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply, as “What is so rare as a day in June?”.
