Paper 1 – Question 3c – Markscheme Level 1 – General Assertions (1-2 marks) Or Identifies reasons for conflict (1-2 marks) Level 2 – Identifies specific ways in which cattlemen or homesteaders were to blame (2-3) Specific contextual knowledge demonstrated but no explanation Or Explains reasons for conflict (2-3 marks) Level 3 – Identifies specific ways in which cattlemen AND homesteaders were to blame (4 marks) Level 4 – Explains how either cattlemen OR homesteaders were to blame (5-6 marks) Level 5 – Explains how BOTH were to blame (6-7 marks) Level 6 – As Level 5 but in addition explains a reason why OVERALL one group was more to blame than the other (8 marks)

Paper 1 – Question 3c You have 10 minutes to write your answer to the following question. Think about how the markscheme wants you to tackle the questions. The cattlemen and the homesteaders were often in conflict with one another. Who was more to blame, the cattlemen or the homesteaders? Explain your answer. (8 marks)

Swap your work with a neighbour. You need 3 different colour pens (red, yellow and green). Read through your neighbour’s work. Every time they write a sentence that is in the first level on the markscheme underline it in red, when they write something that gets them into the second level underline it in yellow, when they write something that puts them in the third level (or above) underline it in green. When you have finished marking their work give them a level and hand it back to them. Add two improvements that would have put them in the next level (if they are in the top level explain how they could get top marks, or what was the best part of their answer).

Paper 1 – Question 3b - Markscheme 3b – Explain why there was so much conflict between the American government and the Plains Indians. (7 marks) Level 1 – General Assertions (1-2 marks) Valid but general answers. No specific contextual knowledge e.g. They didn’t like each other and fought because they both wanted the most power Level 2 – Identifies specific reasons (2-4) Specific contextual knowledge demonstrated but no explanation. Level 3 – Explains one specific reason (3-5) Level 4 – Explains more than one specific reason (6-7) Award six marks for one reason explained and another identified. Award 7 marks for two reasons explained.

Paper 1 – Question 3a - Markscheme 3a - Briefly describe the problems of law and order in mining towns. (5 marks) 1 mark for each valid idea/aim identified, 2-3 marks for any ideas/aims that are described or explained. Award a maximum of 1 mark to general answers lacking in specific contextual knowledge. You should now spend 6 minutes writing an answer to this question.
