3  The white men came and Native American culture was destroyed.  Native Americans were confined to reservations.  The result was: ◦ Persistent poverty ◦ Pervasive alcoholism ◦ Deep despair ◦ Profound hopelessness

4 He suffered brain damage and seizures. He was often hungry. He was beaten up at school. His opportunities for education were poor. His parents loved him, but were gripped by alcoholism. He lived in poverty. He knew his sister’s dreams and yet experienced her untimely death.

7  Mr. P. had the courage to say, “You’re smart!”  Mr. P. had the courage to say, “You have to leave the reservation.”  Mr. P. offered him hope and pointed to a way out.

8 Native American culture White culture Traitor? Success? Lose friends? Make friends? Nowhere? Somewhere? Hopelessness? Dreams?

9 “…to the Spokane Indian Tribe.” “…to the tribe of American immigrants.” “…to the tribe of basketball players.” “…to the tribe of cartoonists.” “…to the tribe of beloved sons.” “…to the tribe of bookworms.” “…to the tribe of small-town kids.” “…to the tribe of funeral goers.” “…to the tribe of boys who really missed their best friends. “ And with that understanding came the realization that, “I belong to the tribe of those who are going to be OK.”
