CONTAINERS INDIA 2014 Challenges in transporting containers to Hinterland Sanjay Swarup GGM, CONCOR 20 th August 2014, Hotel Lalit, Mumbai

Outline of Presentation Setting the Context Assessment of Rail Infrastructure Role of CONCOR Challenges faced in Container transportation Action plan to clear pendencies Future Ahead: DFC/MMLPs

Setting the Context With increase in merchandise trade, container traffic is poised to increase with passage of time. Globally approx. 75% of total cargo being shipped is containerized, whereas in India it is around 50%. India handled around 10.5 million TEUs in 2013-14. Growth is around 15% in the first quarter of 2014-15. Containerization will continue to grow in India till it reaches International standards. There is huge imbalance between imports & exports CONCOR handled around 2.86 million TEUs in 2013- 14 at its vast network of 63 terminals spread across the Country

Rail infrastructure Railways carry 36% of freight traffic in India in train km terms, as compared to 23% in China, 48% in USA and only 10% in Europe. However, for leads over 300 kms, rail share is of the order of 53%. 60% of rail freight traffic is carried on 16% of rail route kms. Railways handled more than 1.05 Billion tons of freight in 2013-14 and is poised to grow further=> its network will fall short of the requirements of expected freight traffic increase. Delhi-Mumbai route is working on more than 100% line capacity utilization. Holiday special trains further aggravate.

Role of CONCOR Pan-India presence: 63 terminals State of the art equipments deployed at terminals: RTG/RMG/RST Around 240 high speed rakes Paved area for container stacking in terminals Modern warehouses Robust IT system: All terminals on network, all operational and commercial procedures on line Highly skilled work force

Challenges faced in Container transportation Imbalance in Imports and Exports (in hinterland as well as at ports) Business shifted from JNPT to Mundra/Pipavav ports (especially Exports) More time taken by some terminals in handling of rakes =>Turnaround time more in JNPT

Action plan to clear pendencies Stepping up loading of Double stack trains at Pipavav and Mundra ports Faster handling at Port terminals (assistance required) Utilization of released line capacity of IR after Summer Holiday special trains => speedy clearance Inducting more rakes for JNPT circuit (released from Mundra/Pipavav circuits: D.S.) Liaison with Trade/NISAA for faster clearance of imports at TKD: to maintain fluidity in ICD Efforts to increase Exports from TKD (assistance required)

Future Ahead: DFC/MMLPs… Total 6 DFCs have been planned. 2 being constructed, total investment of approx. USD 16 Billion Likely completion: 2018. Eastern DFC : Ludhiana-Dankuni, 1839 kms Western DFC: Dadri-JNPT, 1483 kms Trains will be faster, higher and longer on DFC (100 kmph, double stack, high axle load, long hauls) CONCOR: 15 MMLPs (5 on WDFC) Container Rail share: from 22% to 50% (expected)
