ON WAR II. The aim of this course is to introduce students into the issues of war and battle activity. ON WAR II freely follows up on the course ON WAR I. It covers military issues after the 1 st WW. The course debates the role of technological development on the strategic, operational and tactical levels. We will debate, among others: (i) effects of introduction of modern air force, tanks or nuclear weapons, (ii) putative effects of the RMA on the battlefield activity and (iii) the small wars as a (not so?) new kind of war The course is structured along three basic military levels - strategic, operational and tactical. While the ON WAR I. Focused rather on broader implications of war(fare) on society, international politics and the national-state, the ON WAR II will focus rather on tactical or operational level.

Goals: At the end of the semester students should be able to understand the main aspects of wars in the modern era. Specifically, students should be able to understand basic technological, organizational and broader political patterns present in modern wars and modern warfare (at the tactical, operational and strategic level). Students should be able to analyze the significance of recent (or probable future) technological changes for the conduct of war. They should be able to analyze current conflicts and develop broader understanding of military tactics and operational art, which has important implications for come IR theories (namely neo-realism). In addition students should gain deeper understanding of basic technological and organizational concepts and terms related to modern warfare.

Assesment: 20 % in class activity 50 % final paper (cca 5 000 – 7 500 words including footnotes etc.), 15 % take home assignments (one practical problem to solve – write a short 2-3 pgs. report offering a solution), 15 % presentation of an article (or a book) related to the modern warfare. –10-12 minutes, describe and analyze the key argument, find weak (or strong) points and express your opinion on the validity and practical relevance of the results!

Deadlines Please, select final papers topics early. –No later than: 21 th March Send me the final version of your paper no later than: 20 th June (2014). –It may happen that I will demand you to rewrite your paper. You will have two weeks to do it, and to send it back to me. Practical problem to solve – you will have 2 weeks to prepare your solution and (short) report Selection of topics for presentations – 3 rd class (29 th Feb)

Issues of Plagiarism Do not plagiarize! Do not plagiarize! Do not plagiarize! It is a sin… wait a moment… it is (probably) the only one academic sin which sends you from university and perhaps it will destroy your reputation in academia for the rest of your life. Therefore, cite properly all borowed ideas, numbers etc. –For example: Qualitative and quantitative research share general goals (causal inference), nevertheless they are not mutually easily intelligible, because there are important differences in the logical foundations of these two methodological approaches [Mahoney, Goertz 2006 and 2012]. If you want to use exact sentences written by somebody else you have to cite – with reference to exact page(s) if possible. –For example: „…(Mearsheimer´s perspective) it is a realist perspective, it is not the realist perspective“ [Kirschner 2012: 54]
