Scientists found that they were able to create massive amounts of energy by splitting the atom. C. In July, 1945 scientists successfully test the first atomic bomb.

7 ***II. Truman Decides to use the A- bomb A. Truman Issued a warning to Japan to surrender or face complete and utter destruction. B.On August 6 th, 1945 an American plane (Enola Gay) dropped an atomic bomb onto the city of Hiroshima. -70,000 people were instantly killed, 140,000 by the end of 1945.

10 *** C. On August 9 th the U.S. dropped a second bomb onto the city of Nagasaki killing over 40,000 people and 80,000 by the end of 1945. D. Two days later Emperor Hirohito forced the Japanese government to surrender to the U.S. E. September 2, 1945: V-J Day = Victory in Japan Day (Formal surrender)
