ACTIVITY 1 What sort of items are classed as dangerous goods? In your pairs identify as many different items that you think may have to be controlled or could be refused onboard an aircraft.

HAZMAT Dangerous Goods are known as hazardous materials (HAZMAT); Carried by Airlines as freight; IATA designate what is HAZMAT; It will usually be placed in the hold; Pilots may need to know if its onboard; Some things can never be carried by air on scheduled flight; Others can be carried with certain exclusions; Information can be found in IATA/airline dangerous goods documents (see over).

ACTIVITY 2 In your groups, identify items from those provided that you CAN and CANNOT take onboard an aircraft in your hand luggage. For each item say why/why not they can/cannot be taken onboard.

LABELLING There are NINE different categories of dangerous goods as identified by IATA; Most categories of dangerous goods are further sub-divided into sub-groups, depending on the dangers they present; Anything that has some risk attached will have to be stored and packed appropriately and have a label clearly displayed on it.
