Google’s Advanced Operators date: Range of months in a search link:Pages which link to a URL info:Information about a URL site:Search only one site (base URL) related:Find related web pages to a URL eg: type 2 diabetes treatment site:www.evidence.nhs.uk

Google Advanced Search Google Advanced Search…Advanced Search… – Incorporates phrasing, boolean searching – Allows limiting by language – Allows limiting by date – Allows limiting by domain type More about domain types later! Google Scholar – http://scholar.google.co.uk http://scholar.google.co.uk – Searches academic resources e.g.: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles

Evaluating Web Resources Web pages can be set up by anybody Before referencing a site, check that you are aware the information is reliable! Key question: “Is the web page as good as information you would find in a book or academic journal?”

Evaluating Web Resources Check: – Who wrote the information? Do they have relevant qualifications? Have they written other material on the subject? Do they have a bias? – When was the information published? Is it current enough for your needs? – Why was the page put on the web? Is it selling or promoting something? Is it biased?

Organisation Collaboration Communication Think about what you want to do, then think about which social media tool will help you achieve that. Social Media Top tip:

Prof David Skibinski, College of Medicine, Swansea University "With feeds from all my favourite journals and science web sites, Netvibes helps keeps me up to date with alerts about the latest research." www.netvibes.com

Dr Simon Dymond College of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University “I tweet about my research to draw attention to it (and, it is hoped, increase its "impact").” “I also tweet about my findings from my research area (behaviour analysis and behaviourism) because is often misrepresented, as well other topics I am interested in.” “I see Twitter as a forum by which like-minded people interact and share resources. It is really impressive how many academics and researchers from around the world have a presence on Twitter!” www.twitter.com

Helen Davies eLearning team, Swansea University “Dropbox allows me to work with files on multiple computers and to share large files seamlessly and securely with others. My email struggles to cope with files over 10 mb, but sending a file to my dropbox is as simple as dragging/copying a file (or files) to a folder on my desktop.” www.dropbox.com

Sam Webster, College of Medicine, Swansea University “I use Google Drive to collaborate with clinical colleagues when writing. We can see, edit and discuss what each has written much faster than if we tried to respond by email or to meet regularly. The Google Drive version of the document is always the up to date version.” www.drive.google.com
