Woodrow Wilson 1914 – U.S. policy of neutrality The United States is an Immigrant nation. There were large German populations around the country. So who’s side should we even join???? This made the United State’s “neutrality” difficult.

President Wilson wanted to keep the United States OUT OF the war. Wilson’s peace efforts.

Black Tom Island Incident: -Major munitions depot. -German agents sabotaged the ammo dump. By 2:00 the first explosion occurred. Some damage was also done to the Statue of Liberty. Windows were broken up to 25 miles away. Moving towards war.

Zimmerman Note 1917 – British intercept a telegram being sent from German’s to Mexico. The telegram is asking Mexico to declare war on the United States. WHY??? Is this a good move on Germany’s part?

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare While officially neutral, the U.S. was selling supplies to Allied countries in Europe to help them fight the Germans. ? Does Germany, if it feels threatened by foreign shipping across the Atlantic, have the right????

Raising an ARMY: In order to fight the United States needed to increase the size of it’s army. On May 18 th, 1917 Congress passed the selective service act – (the draft). In your opinion was a draft necessary? Legal? Educating the Troops: In Training these troops the military taught them many things. (page 694) list 3. Education in schools also increased as nearly 75% of childrean were now enrolled in school. Preparing to Fight

Managing industry: America needed to increase it’s industry. As a result of shortages Pres. Wilson setup the WAR INDUSTRIES board. The WAR LABOR board was also setup to prevent strikes and worker disputes. Managing the War Effort

Anti-German Prejudice: During this time some Germans faced intolerance in America. This was brought on by the attacks on Black Tom Island and the Zimmerman note. Opposition to the War Some groups opposed the war. Turn to page 696 and list them. The Home Front
