Postcard Design Objective: Students will identify significant places and people in order to create a visual artwork in response. Think about… Have you ever personally sent or received a post card? WHY do people send post cards? Why did you send it or why was it sent to you?
11
The First Post Card: Cards with messages had been sporadically created and posted by individuals since the beginning of postal services. The earliest known picture postcard was a hand-painted design on card, posted in Fulham in London to the writer Theodore Hook in 1840 bearing a penny black stamp. [1]FulhamTheodore Hookpenny black [1] He probably created and posted the card to himself as a practical joke on the postal service, since the image is a caricature of workers in the post office. [1][2] In 2002 the postcard sold for a record £31,750. [1] [1][2] [1]
12
First commercially produced Post Cards: The first commercially produced card was created in 1861 by John P. Charlton of Philadelphia, who patented a postal card, and sold the rights to Hymen Lipman, whose postcards, complete with a decorated border, were labeled "Lipman's postal card".John P. The right side This contains the name and address of the person to whom the card is sent. It also contains the stamp and location stamp. Objective: Students will identify significant places and people in order to create a visual artwork in response.

PostSecret PostSecret is an ongoing community mail art project, created by Frank Warren in 2005, in which people mail their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard. Selected secrets are then posted on the PostSecret website, or used for PostSecret's books or museum exhibits. The concept of the project was that completely anonymous people decorate a postcard and portray a secret that they had never previously revealed. No restrictions are made on the content of the secret; only that it must be completely truthful and must never have been spoken before. Objective: Students will identify significant places and people in order to create a visual artwork in response.
20
Revelations of Self How do your secrets define the person only you know as yourself? What are your secret goals? Secret fears? Secret passions? Secret habits? Secret crushes? Secret memories? Secret talents? Objective: Students will identify significant places and people in order to create a visual artwork in response.
21
Consider design: Many successful Post Cards use design elements. *What do these post card artists use to make their text stand out? *How do the images relate to and reinforce the message in the text?
22
How will you design your post card? How are the text and pic positioned? Remember these theme and design ideas: *Images and Symbols of Place *Collage images (with borders) *Illustration OBJ: We will observe, discuss and analyze modern and historical post card designs. *Designs/ Art Cards *Images within Text *Large Main Image, text around it. *Places/ About you/ Post secret GOALS FOR TODAY: 1.Brainstorm where you want to show. 2.Look at pictures.
