1
Specific Heat Capacity The Smarties Anology I need 3 volunteers!
2
Students Total number of smarties eaten Total number of spots gained Number of smarties to get 1 spot (specific smarties capacity) Predictions: Number of smarties that must be eaten to get 5 spots.
3
Specific Heat Capacity This is the amount of energy 1kg of a substance needs for its temperature to increase by 1 o C It is measured in J/ kg/ o C
4
SPECIFIC LATENT HEAT When a substance is being heated, you can tell that the particles are absorbing energy by measuring the temperature. For example, as you heat water, you should see a temperature increase as time goes by. But something odd will happen when the water starts to boil…. The temperature will stop increasing!
5
The heating curve Temperature ( o C) Time (minutes) 18 100 4 16 In this experiment, how long did it take for the water to start boiling? Why didn’t the temperature of the water increase after 4 minutes? How long did it take for all the water to turn into steam? 4 minutes The energy was being used to separate the water molecules and turn the liquid into a gas. 12 minutes w a t e r o n l y water and steam s t e a m o n l y
6
Specific Latent Heat This is the amount of energy 1kg of a substance needs to change state. The temperature will not increase. It is measured in J/kg
7
Specific Latent Heat Calculations Mass of object changing state (kg) How is it changin g? Specific latent of substance (J/(kg) Energy Absorbed / Released 1boiling2,260,000 2boiling2,260,000 4freezing330,000
