The Poet’s Corner

Figurative Language We’ve talked about this a few times now… Take a minute to write down your definition for FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Figurative Language is language that goes beyond the literal meaning to create new meaning.

Similes…They’re back! A comparison using “like,” “as” or “resembles” “Dreams Deferred” What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

Metaphors A comparison that says one subject is another IMPORTANT: Many metaphors do not follow the structure of a is b. Often times in poetry, one subject is being represented or replaced by another – these are called extended metaphors

The Rose that Grew from Concrete By Tupac Shakur Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete? Proving nature's law is wrong it learned to walk with out having feet. Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air. Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else ever cared.

Analogy A comparison made between two things to show how they are alike.  For example: Watch is to wrist as necklace is to neck. To solve this analogy, you must determine exactly what relationship is present.

Examples 1.Car is to road as four-wheeler is to field. 2.Door is to closed as bag is to sealed. 3.Fish is to water as tortoise is to land. 4.CREATE YOUR OWN!

A Hyperbole is an exaggeration. Explain the hyperboles the author uses about the poor.

Personification assigning human characteristics or qualities to non-living objects

Idiom An expression that has a meaning apart from the meanings of its individual words Example: It’s raining cats and dogs.
