The Future Skills and Competences in the Pulp and Paper Industry Panel II: Education and training providers Paolo Zaninelli p.zaninelli@sanzeno.org A contribution to the discussion

Paper Industry in Italy vs Training center (2013) Paolo Zaninelli – The Future Skills and Competences in the Pulp and Paper Industry - 2016 Scuola cartaria SAN ZENO Verona -122 companies -156 paper mills -19.700 employees -8,6 Millions tons Production -6,8 Billion of Euro Verona Fabriano Lucca Pescia (new) Total: - 4 training center - Total 45 students/Year

Appeal among young people -The paper industry does not seem “attractive" to young people. The new vocations are in fact very low. When companies look for technical personnel on its territory cannot find it. -There are still prejudices about the environmental impact of the paper industry that keep students away from our industry. -The awareness campaign and orientation in the "primary school" sponsored by Assocarta and Industrialists of Lucca did not give significant results. -There aren't funds for young people choosing this industrial sector, that help them to study in the few training centers (in some cases the funds made available by some regions have given the opportunity for some students to attend the Master of Lucca Paper). Paolo Zaninelli – The Future Skills and Competences in the Pulp and Paper Industry - 2016 Scuola cartaria SAN ZENO Verona

Job skill vs Educational offer -We have to check the real needs of new employees (at the different levels) and also we have to check the needs to increase the skills of existing staff. -In case of new employees at the operator level, is a special training required for five years, or would a post-graduation course be sufficient? -How many new managers to be included in the industry? Is it better a qualified person with a long path of specialization (engineers paper), or a person with a “different university degree” that eventually will attend a specialized master course? Paolo Zaninelli – The Future Skills and Competences in the Pulp and Paper Industry - 2016 Scuola cartaria SAN ZENO Verona Paper production Print and printability Automation Mechanical maintenance Packaging Safety and environment R&D

Partnership between: School, Companies, Public Authorities -Companies need training for their employees! This need exists, is recognized by the questionnaire. -The partnership between businesses and schools in Italy (3 of 4) is very strong because there are “technical and scientific committees” for the definition of profiles and curricula. -Most technical expertise comes from industry -Public authorities in Italy do not help much the papermaking sector. They support financially only two “state schools”, but state does not support specific training for teachers and does not develop research centers. Paolo Zaninelli – The Future Skills and Competences in the Pulp and Paper Industry - 2016 Scuola cartaria SAN ZENO Verona
