The Cask Of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe Elements of a Short Story By Natalia M. Torres Serrano ENGL-1010 Prof. Minerva Morales

I decided to read “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe. The Elements of a Short Story are the following: 1.Setting that describe the place, time, weather conditions, social conditions, mood or atmosphere. 2.Plot includes the introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and final outcome of the story. 3.Conflict internal or external. 4.Characters are the persons involved in the story or characteristics. 5.Point of view is the angle from which the story is told.

Setting: I’ll start saying that the date or place are not defined in this story, but ill assume it is in Italy, France or someplace like that because of the names of the characters, the word that they used to describe things. I think that the social condition is very highly maintenance and very wealthy. The mood or atmosphere is suspense and in some point a mystery and horror.

Plot: The introduction of this short story is when Montresor gives us the readers the information that another man has been insulting him in some many ways. So, being said that, the narrator gives us the impression that he’s going to avenge himself. The rising action would be tricking Fortunato with the wine so he could express his wisdom and expertise” in that matter. And involving him with that topic while Montresor introduce him into de catacombs where his nightmare begin.

The climax is when Fortunato is being trapped to be chained by Montresor and he doesn’t even know. And it reassures that the revenge is just going to start at that moment. The falling action is when Montresor builds the brick wall meanwhile he hears Fortunato screaming and whining, but that doesn’t stop him to keep building up the brick wall. The final action in the story is when Montresor talks about the undiscoverable crime that he committed 50 years early and got away with it unpunished.

Conflict: Person vs. Person – Montresor’s vendetta against Fortunato. Person vs. Self – Montresor’s fight with hisn mind and the person that he is. Person vs. Society – By Montresor’s murdering one of his own kind.

Characters: Montresor and Fortunato Point of View: From Montresor point of view is first person.
