From idea to product… The Layout Sequence
2
Pre-Planning What is the finished product to do? (IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM) - Attract attention, inform, entertain... Who will use the product? (Do some RESEARCH) - A business, students, parents, a specific group... Should the product have a personality? (Design & Layout) - Sophisticated, gaudy, dignified, humorous... How will the final product be produced? (Production) - Booklet, folder, bulletin, brochure, single sheet...
3
Thumbnail Sketches… Simple, rapidly drawn designs for layout Size of the sketch is not important. Multiple sketches, Multiple ideas. Showing placement of the key elements Demonstrates space, rhythm, and balance. Helps the artist visualize the end product.
4
Rough Layout… A sketched version of the final product A rough drawing, neater than a thumbnail sketch Everything is drawn to size Identifies the type and size of text going to be used in the final design. Contains images neatly sketched In industry today, usually a Rough Layout design has to be checked and approved by the designer, client and sometimes the printer.
5
Comprehensive Sketch Shows how the printed piece will look when finished. Usually produced using computer software. Details are finalized – color, text type and size, images etc… Is a “mock-up” of the final product.
6
How about an example: We are going to design a “ WANTED POSTER.” Ask yourself: Answers: What is it to do?To inform the public Who will use it?Anyone seeking a reward How should it look?Serious, old style, attention getting How should it be made?Low cost, single sheet
7
Do some research, look at other examples Start to brainstorming ideas! Think about what kind of image will want to use. What font style do you want to use? What information needs to be included?
