2 Putting a face to a name Now that we know the types of triads and seventh chords, how do we use them in tonal music? Diatonic Chords: chords that are made using notes that are in the key Chromatic/Altered Chords: All other chords that are using notes not in the key To be able to distinguish between the triads built on the various scale degrees from the scale degrees themselves, we use roman numerals instead of Arabic numerals (V instead of 5) Triad TypeRoman NumeralExample MajorUppercaseV MinorLowercasevi DiminishedLowercase w/ a ◦ vii ◦ AugmentedUppercase w/ a + III+

4 Diatonic Triads in Minor Remember!! There are 3 forms of minor scales and there are a few rules to think about! Generalizations: 6 and 7 scale degree are variable Typically a raised 6 th and 7 th scale degree will ascend by step Typically a lowered 6 th and 7 th scale degree will descend by step

5 Diatonic triads in minor continued… The construction of triads is more involved than in major since ^6 and ^7 are variable and since nearly all contain ^6 and ^7, more diatonic triads are possible in minor. There are seven triads in minor that occur more frequently than the others, and those are the ones we will focus on and use in our examples.
