MERLIN Hardware Overview Microgravity Experiment Research Locker Incubator (MERLIN) Features: Advanced Single Middeck Locker Incubator / Freezer (Heat exchanger designed for both rear-air or water loop heat rejection) Interfaces to Shuttle middeck, SPACEHAB, and ISS EXPRESS rack Accommodate existing experiments designed for CRIM (some minor modifications may be required) 30+ pound payload with 16.5” (X) by 10.188” (Y) by 6.69” (Z) experiment volume (CG at the center of the experiment volume) Payload volume for both conduction or convection cooling modes Provides thermal control from -20 o C to 48.5 o C Fully programmable temperature control including ramps and recovery modes can be configured / executed via the display, EXPRESS RIC, and remotely from the ground (both commanding and file uplink) Downlink EXPRESS Rack interface accommodated – System temperature sensor readings (8) Experiment temp. sensor readings (up to 12) PID control temperature (derived) A/D sensor readings (up to 10) Digital I/O readings (8) Last command status information Error reporting/acknowledgement information Data storage utilization status Thermal control data Qualification and acceptance testing complete 1 qualification unit/trainer and 7 flight units available for use. GLACIER Hardware Overview General Laboratory Active Cryogenic ISS Experiment Refrigerator (GLACIER) Features (pending qualification testing): Working prototype ready; final design in process; flight units available in FY06. Advanced Double Middeck Locker Cryofreezer (Rear- air breather and water) Interfaces to Shuttle middeck, SPACEHAB, and EXPRESS rack Can be configured to accommodate many size samples. 28.6 pound payload with 10.75” (X) by 10.75” (Y) by 16.5” (Z) sample storage area Provides thermal control from +4 o C to -185 o C Uplink EXPRESS Rack interface accommodated for remote control or file uplink. LADR Hardware Overview Locker Active Door Recharger (LADR) Features: Utilized as a door to be integrated to a standard ISS locker for temperature control of items in the locker. Utilizes an ISS MLE and LoTEC passive cooler Can be used for active thermal control of payload contents in a LoTEC, regeneration of phase-change material for other systems, or thermal pre- conditioning of a LoTEC carrier prior to its use as a passive thermal transport carrier Controls temperature from –20C to +40C Water, Power & Communications Interfaces to EXPRESS rack EXPRESS Rack Downlink interface accommodated with configurable health & status LADR weight: 9.9 lbs Documentation Available: Users Manual As-Built Cert Materials Identification & Usage List (Copies of Actual Material Certs available at additional cost) Drawing Package Test Reports Structural Analysis Package (per SSP 52005) Environmental testing complete 1 protoflight unit available for use.
