2. Born and raised in Adams, Massachusetts. Family was a Quaker family, which is a religious society of friends. Went to a Quaker school in Philadelphia from 1826-1838 She had seven other siblings, but two died.

3. Her father’s business failed in late 1830s. Susan returned home to help out her family. Being the second eldest, Susan found work as a teacher. Her family moved to a farm in the Rochester, New York area
