Born and raised in Adams, Massachusetts. Family was a Quaker family, which is a religious society of friends. Went to a Quaker school in Philadelphia from 1826-1838 She had seven other siblings, but two died.

Her father’s business failed in late 1830s. Susan returned home to help out her family. Being the second eldest, Susan found work as a teacher. Her family moved to a farm in the Rochester, New York area

Susan was determined She never gave up even though: Went in & out of debt Ridiculed for being single and unmarried Her effigies were drug through town & mockingly hung Effigies are sculptures or a model of a person
