THE CODING SYSTEM FOR REPRESENTING DATA IN COMPUTER

What is a coding Scheme ? Provide the means to interact with a computer When a letter is pressed on a keyboard, the electronic signals are converted into binary form and stored into memory The computer processes the data as bytes of information and converts them to the letters we see on the monitor screen or on printed page.

BASIC ASCII Use 7 bits to represent a character Consists of 128 character in the 7 bits code Primarily used on PC and SERVER (microcomputers)

EXTENDED ASCII Use 8 bits to represent character Can represent 256 character Primarily used on PC and SERVER Function of ASCII  Enables manufactures to produce components that are assured to operate correctly in a computer

EBCDIC Use 8 bits to represent a character Can represent 256 character Primarily used on mainframe and high end servers Coding methods used by computers tp present letters, numbers, or other symbols in a binary language the computer can understand

UNICODE Used 16 bits and maximum 32 bits to represent a character Capable to represent more than 65000 characters Implemented in several OS (Windows, Mac OS, Linux) It allows all written language of the world to be represented using a single character set.
