Notes on 1 st Amendment Freedoms Unit 3: Citizenship

Bill of Rights The U.S. Constitution establishes and protects the citizens’ rights and liberties. Few rights, if any, are considered absolute. There are five fundamental freedoms that are protected by the 1 st Amendment.

Freedom of Speech Freedom of Speech – Individuals are free to express their opinions and beliefs. – Includes verbal, written, and symbolic expressions of speech.

Freedom of Religion Freedom of Religion – Government may not establish an official religion, nor endorse, or unduly interfere with the free exercise of religion.

Freedom of the Press Freedom of the Press – The press has the right to gather and publish information, including that which criticizes the government. – Includes the media – newspapers, tv, internet, etc.

Freedom of Assembly Freedom of Assembly – Individuals may peacefully gather.

Freedom of Petition Freedom of Petition – Individuals have the right to make their views known to public officials. – Citizens have the right to protest. – Includes verbal, written, and symbolic expressions.
