DESCRIPTION “Hepatitis” means inflammation of the liver Usually caused by a virus When the liver is inflamed, it can have a harder time doing some of its jobs. A hepatitis virus is one that lives in liver cells and causes inflammation. Different hepatitis viruses have been given different names, such as A, B, and C.

SYMPTOMS HEPATITIS C Fever Fatigue Loss of appetite Nausea Vomiting Abdominal pain Gray-colored bowel movements Joint pain Jaundice HEPATITIS B Yellowing skin or eyes (or jaundice) Not feeling hungry Feeling tired Muscle, joint, or stomach pain Stomach upset, diarrhea, or vomiting

PREVENTION Hepatitis B vaccine, no hepatitis c vaccine PERSONS AT RISK: Infants born to infected mothers Sex partners of infected persons Persons with multiple sex partners Persons with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) Men who have sex with men Injection drug users Household contacts of infected persons Healthcare and public safety workers exposed to blood on the job Hemodialysis patients Residents and staff of facilities for developmentally disabled persons Hepatitis B and C viruses are spread through contact with blood or bodily fluids of a person with the virus. The viruses are not spread through casual contact, such as holding hands, sharing eating utensils or drinking glasses, breastfeeding, kissing, hugging, coughing, or sneezing. To avoid coming in contact with blood or bodily fluids of others: Avoid sharing personal items, such as razors or toothbrushes DO NOT share drug needles or other drug equipment (such as straws for snorting drugs) Clean blood spills with a solution containing 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water Be careful when getting tattoos and body piercings Safe sex means taking steps before and during sex that can prevent you from getting an infection, or from giving an infection to your partner.
