Check Test #1 Questions on Significant Figures

You “CANNOT” do any work in your head. This means you must show every step with its needed step. If your instructor requires you to do so, “TYPE” or “PRINT” each of the following questions. If you PRINT, you must use a Number # 2 Pencil. You must first write the Question and then “Show Your Work” for each part under each question and then move to the next part. If it is a mathematical problem, you must show the equation, substitute and then work it out showing every needed step.

I. Questions On Significant Figures: 1.Which term means that two or more measurements have values that are very close to each other? 2.Why do we use significant figures? 3.When are zeros in numbers not significant? 4.What kind of numbers have an infinite number of significant figures? 5.What kind of physical measurements can be measured with absolute accuracy? 6.When can several measurements show a high degree of precision, but have poor accuracy? 7.What are some of the causes that produce uncertainty in measurements? 8.What term means that a value is very close to the true value? 9. a) What does 16 +/- 1 mL mean? b) 16.1 +/- 0.1 mL mean?

I. Questions On Significant Figures: 10. Which numbers are uncertain in (a) 46 mL (b) 96.0 mL (c) 4.8 x 10-3 mL? 11. Give two different kinds of numbers that have an unlimited number of significant figures. 12. What determines how many significant figures can appear in an answer that is obtained from using several measured values in a calculation? 13. a. What is the last significant figure number? b. Significant figure rounding number? 14. When adding measurements that have different numbers of significant figures, what rule is used for finding the number of significant figures in the final answer?

1. 0.3 2. 1.23 x 10 3. 64.170 - 4 4. 7000 5. 74.06 6. 5.60 x 10 2 II.Give the number of significant figures found in each of the following

1.632.66 2.190.6 3.6.3648 4.1.00543 5.0.01985 6. 7.7764 x 10² III. Round-off the following number so they will each have three significant figures

1.= ? 2. = ? 3. = ? liters *Definitions: 1 liter = 1000 mL and 1 mL = 1 cc 4. = ? grams IV.Do the following calculations and then round-off the answer to the correct number of significant figures

5. *4 quarts = 1 gallon and 1000 mL = 1 liter are both definitions. The 1.00 liter = 1.06 quart; 0.801 gram = 1.00 mL and 1.00 pound = 454 grams each has only 3 significant figures 6.= ? 7. Volume of a solid = length x width x height Volume = (3.00 cm) (0.700 cm) (1.20 cm) Volume = ? cubic centimeters IV.Do the following calculations and then round-off the answer to the correct number of significant figures

8.= ?mL 9.= ? minutes 10.Add 164.67 cm ; 46.1 cm ; and 0.986 cm 11.Subtract 17.6 grams from 96.48 grams 12.= ? seconds All the above given values are definitions except the 2.00 days! IV.Do the following calculations and then round-off the answer to the correct number of significant figures
