AIM: How does distillation work?
Question Has anyone here ever drank distilled water? Has anyone ever used distilled water? Answer?
7
Liquid water evaporates (turns to a gas)
#1 What happens in Step #1 Liquid water evaporates (turns to a gas)
8
The gas (water vapor) condenses to liquid
#2 What happens in step #2? The gas (water vapor) condenses to liquid
9
What happens to the salt? Where does it go?
#2 What happens to the salt? Where does it go?
10
#2 The salt does not evaporate at that temperature - it stays in the beaker!
11
We are going to examine all 5 steps.
Examine this slide :: We are going to examine all 5 steps.
12
What is happening at step #1. The water is being heated.
13
What phase change occurs at step #2. Evaporation.
14
What is happening at step #3 and #4
The water vapor travels down the tube.
15
What phase change is occurring at step 5?
The water vapor condenses into liquid water
16
What causes the water to condense?
Step 3 Step 4 Step 2 Step 5 Step 1 What causes the water to condense? Lower temperature - slower movement of the water particles - less energy

Petroleum is a natural mixture of hydrocarbons and must be processed to make gasoline, heating oil, and other products: *the process is called fractional distillation
19
*when the petroleum is heated, it changes into a gas (vaporize), which is collected and cooled -- when it cools it changes back to a liquid because of condensation. *Because different substances condense at different temperatures, the distillation process is able to separate the different petroleum products
