PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR RESOURCES There are several personality assessments an organization can choose from. This presentation will introduce the following assessments: The “Big Five” Model Myers-Briggs Framework Emotional Intelligence StrengthsFinder Real Colors

PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR RESOURCES The “Big Five” Model The “Big Five” identifies five fundamental personality traits from high to Low Agreeableness- persons ability to get along with others Conscientiousness- number of goals on which a person focuses Negative Emotionality- extent to which a person is poised, calm, resilient, and secure Extraversion- a person’s comfort level with relationships Openness- a person rigidity of beliefs and range of interests The value of the framework encompasses am integrated set of traits that appear to be valid predictors of behaviors in situations. Managers who can understand the framework and the ability to assess these traits in their employees will be able to understand why employees behave as they do. It is argued that the Big Five does not explain all of human personality. The methodology used to identify the dimensional structure of personality traits, factor analysis, is often challenged for not having a universally- recognized basis for choosing among solutions with different numbers of factors. PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR RESOURCES Myers-Briggs Framework The framework is based on work from Carl Jung and evaluates people based on four general terms. Defined as: Extraversion vs. Introversion- extraverts get energy from other people and introverts get worn out by others Sensing vs. Intuition- sensing people prefer concrete things and intuitive people prefer abstract concepts Thinking vs. Feeling- thinking people base decisions on logic and reason, feeling people focus on feelings and emotions Judging vs. Perceiving- judging people enjoy completion or being finished whereas perceiving enjoy the process People take a questionnaire and will assessed into one of sixteen types. Myers-Briggs is one of the most popular personality assessments today. Researchers suggest it is most useful for determining communication styles and interaction preferences. Type tables that contain information about a particular group of people are often helpful in facilitating communication for teams or in facilitating the analysis of data for specific groups of people or professions. The terminology of the MBTI has been criticized as being very "vague and general“. In Fortune Magazine on May 15, 2013, "The interesting -- and somewhat alarming -- fact about the MBTI is that, despite its popularity, it has been subject to sustained criticism by professional psychologists for over three decades. One problem is that it displays what statisticians call low "test-retest reliability." So if you retake the test after only a five-week gap, there's around a 50% chance that you will fall into a different personality category compared to the first time you took the test." PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR RESOURCES Emotional Intelligence The concept of Emotional Intelligence provides insights into personality in the following categories: Self-awareness- a person’s capacity for being aware of how they are feeling, more self-aware a person is they can manage their own lives and behaviors. Managing emotions- a person’s capacities to balance anxiety, fear, and anger so that they can get things accomplished Motivating oneself- a person’s ability to remain optimistic and striving in the face of setbacks, barriers, and failure Empathy- a person’s ability to understand how others are feeling Social skills- ability to get along with others and to establish positive relationships Preliminary research suggests that people with high Emotional Intelligence may perform better than others, especially in jobs that require a high degree of interpersonal interaction and that involve influencing or directing the work of others. Emotional Intelligence is a personality strengths that can be developed. New research is surfacing that suggests that ability EI measures might be measuring personality in addition to general intelligence. More formally termed socially desirable responding (SDR), faking good is defined as a response pattern in which test-takers systematically represent themselves with an excessive positive bias. The best way to measure is to see a person in the actual situation.

PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR RESOURCES StrengthsFinder The Gallup Organization has interviewed 1.7 million professionals from varying fields. Having quantified the different traits of the people they interviewed and came up with 34 distinct patterns called "talent themes“ describing the range of human uniqueness observed during their research. Gallup's Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment is the first step in helping people identify their talents. Clifton StrengthsFinder results give people a way to discuss and develop their unique combination of skills, talents, and knowledge -- also known as strengths. Gallup research proves that people succeed when they focus on what they do best. When they identify their talents and develop them into strengths, people are more productive, perform better, and are more engaged. Leading personality psychologists have challenged the value of the "strength-based development" approach. They find the approach faulty because strengths-only is not viable, strengths can become weaknesses, and weaknesses matter.

PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR RESOURCES Real Colors The instrument is based on the premise that you can take left-brain (linear) information, and turn it into an exciting, interactive right-brain experience. The right brain style uses colors, pictures, and interactive activities to hook the participants. The assessment results categorizes people into four colors: Blue- does not like routine, uses metaphors, concerned for the feelings of others Gold- notices facts and details, plans ahead, pushes to have things decided and settled Green- comfortable with topics not related to feelings, points out problems, upset by injustice Orange- enjoys the unexpected, speaks quickly, works in a way that make the process enjoyable Its simple approach to identifying temperament with rich, interactive and experiential team building activities is unsurpassed for capturing the attention and retention of audiences. Improves working teams relationships. Simple assessment that should not be taken seriously. Does not have any real research done to validate the accuracy.
