Nara Japan During Taika, city of Nara became center of Japanese life –Modeled after China’s Capital Gov. job based on power, not exam score. –Received Estates as pay Emperor controlled land Gov. took census –Determined what taxes people paid –Also determined military service

Buddhism in Japan As Gov. grew, Buddhism became more popular –Came to Japan through Korea Officials some of the first to accept Religion –Played major role in Gov. Officials who weren’t Buddhists opposed its power –Led to big fight Government eventually moved to Heian

Rise of the Shogun Around A.D. 800, new capital built in Heian –Emperor’s power weakens Many weak Emperors –Many were children »Regents rule for them »Regents refused to give up power when emperors could rule –Regents now rule Japan Let nobles keep and rule land –Nobles collected higher taxes from the pesants
