Timeline of the Franks 481 A.D- Clovis becomes king of the Franks 732-Franks defeat Muslims at Tours 751- Charlemagne becomes king of the Franks 800- Pope Leo III crowns Charlemagne Emperor. 814- Charlemagne dies. 843- Charlemagne’s grandsons divide up empire in 3 parts.

Location of the Franks The Franks settled in Gaul, which is present day France, Northern Italy, Belgium, western Switzerland, parts of the Netherlands and Germany

King Clovis Became king in 481 A.D. Conquered former Roman Province of Gaul Converted to Christianity

Charles Martel Ruled Northern Gaul from 719 A.D. to 741 A.D. Helped to convert Germany to Christianity Defeated Muslim army at Tours in 732 A.D.

King Charlemagne The grandson of Charles Martel Became king of the Franks in 751 In 800 Pope Leo, crowned him emperor of the Romans on Christmas day Was able to reunite much of the old Roman empire in Europe, and created a Frankish empire

Charlemagne continued Appointed powerful German nobles to rule local regions To keep control of the provincial rulers sent out officials called missi domenici Had respected scholar Alcuin set up a curriculum based on Latin learning and this became educational model for medieval Europe.

Decline of the Franks Charlemagne dies in 814 and his empire soon fell apart Treaty of Verdun, drew up by grandsons of Charlemagne divide empire in 3 parts New attacks from Magyars and Vikings destroyed the last threads of unity in Charlemagne’s empire
