2 ISBN/ISSN Validation Validate ISBN, EAN-13 and ISSN entries: –ISBN validation will occur for 020‡a and 024‡a (with first indicator 3) –ISSN validation will occur for 022‡a and 022‡z –works with bibliographic records only –validation algorithm at work to ensure that correct format is observed

3 ISBN/ISSN Validation Three factors tested –The number to be of valid length (8, 10 or 13 characters), –It verifies the weighted sum for each character in the number, and –It confirms that the number has a valid check digit. The check digit is the last digit, calculated on a modulus 11. Note that X is used in lieu of 10, where 10 would occur as a check digit. For more information on the algorithm, Google “Modulus 11”
