2 Level 3 NCEA NCEA Level 3 shall be awarded to students who have achieved 60 credits at Level 3 or higher plus 20 more credits at level 2 or higher. To gain University Entrance in 2014 students must gain: NCEA Level 3 a minimum of 14 achievement standard credits at Level 3 or higher in each of three subjects from an approved subject list, on the NZ Qualifications framework or approved subjects Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:10 credits at Level 2 or above 5 credits in reading 5 credits in writing Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, 10 credits at Level 1 or above UE link

3 Course entry to university programmes in addition to UE, most universities have a further requirement for course entry. This is calculated on your best 80 credits at Level 3 in approved subjects. Excellence credits are multiplied by 4, merit credits by 3 and achieved credits by 2 to give you a total score. 4 University entry scores Victoria – 150 for all programmes except Architectural Studies (180) Victoria Guaranteed Entry Score Auckland University Rank score Otago – 140 Massey and Canterbury – 120 Waikato and Lincoln- UE AUT – specific criteria for many courses Auckland – BA – 140, BPE – 140, BSc – 150, BCom-180, BNursing – 210, BHSci – 210, BSc (Biomed) – 250, Engineering 250, Architecture 230 Fine Arts and Design courses often require a portfolio Some courses require an interview All other tertiary institutions (e.g. polytechnics and private providers) have criteria for entry to specific courses which you can find on their websites or see Mrs Johnson in the Careers room. 5 Internal and External Assessment Internal Assessment Internal assessments are used to assess skills and knowledge that cannot be tested in an exam, e.g. speeches, research projects and performances. External Assessment External assessments are by examination at the end of the year. For some subjects, e.g. Technology or Visual Arts, students submit a portfolio of their work at the end of year. It is important to answer every question in every standard to maximise your opportunities to succeed. Reduced number of standards and/or credits per course Pre-requisites for further study

6 Further Assessment Opportunity / Resubmission Further Assessment Opportunity One further assessment opportunity may be given where practicable. Resubmission Where a minor error has been made, a student may be invited to review and modify that section of their work to achieve a specific grade.

7 Endorsements Level 3 NCEA Endorsements Endorsement with Merit: 50 credits at Merit or Excellence at Level 3 Endorsement with Excellence: 50 credits at Excellence at Level 3 Course Endorsement Students can also gain a course endorsement. Merit Endorsement 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence Excellence Endorsement 14 or more credits at Excellence For most subjects at least 3 credits must be from externally assessed standards and 3 from internally assessed standards.

8 Absence from Assessments Absence from an Internal Assessment If you are absent from an assessment due to medical reasons, a medical certificate must be provided. If you are absent for any other unforseen circumstance (e.g. bereavement), the teacher must be notified by your parent/caregiver. If you are aware that you will be absent from an assessment (e.g. for a specialist appointment) an arrangement may be made with your teacher in advance Absence from an External Assessment If you are absent for any reason from an external assessment, evidence must be provided (e.g medical certificate) There is no further assessment opportunity for a missed external assessment.

9 Authenticity and Extensions Authenticity All work submitted for NCEA must be your own Students who submit work other than their own will be given a Not Achieved grade for that standard. The student will also be disciplined. Extensions An extension may be applied for if you know in advance that you will be unable to complete an internal assessment task on or by the due date. A written explanation explaining the reason for the request must be signed by your parent/caregiver and given to the classroom teacher. If you are absent on the day the assessment is due, alternative arrangements must be made to ensure that the work is still handed in that day.

Scholarship exams enable candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able candidates in each subject. Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations.
