Class Notes 1 Genetic Technology
3
I. Selective Breeding A. By breeding the best plants and animals, we get the biggest and most delicious produce and meat.
4
B. We also get purebred pets and more beautiful plants
5
II. Recombinant DNA A. When fragments of DNA are cut or “cleaved” from one organism and inserted into another (the host). B. The new organism now has its own DNA combined with other DNA: transgenic organism
6
Facts: DO NOT WRITE Scientists have cloned transgenic pigs that grow human organs ! Bacteria can be injected with DNA so they make human proteins, like insulin for diabetes.
7
DO NOT WRITE 50% of soybeans and 25% of the corn grown in the U.S. in 2005 is transgenic. Many have genes that produce an insecticide
8
III. Clones A. A clone is an organism produced from the cell of another organism. It has the same DNA!! B. Cloning may save endangered species, but the animals may have more health problems. The 1 st cloned cat: The 1 st cloned cat:Copycat
9
IV. The Human Genome Project A. Started by U.S. scientists in 1990 B. Finding out what chromosome each gene is located on C. The genes DNA sequence is then determined.
10
V. Gene therapy A. In the future, genetic disorders may be corrected by inserting normal genes into disfunctional chromosomes.
