Evaluation of the ECMWF ERA-interim wind data for numerical wave hind-casting in the Caspian Sea Iranian Port and Maritime Organization The University of Western, Australia Pouya Tarh Pars Consulting Engineering Company, Tehran, Iran

Study area Caspian Sea Largest enclosed sea Longitude: 46.5°-54° E Latitude: 36.5°-47° N Maximum depth: 1100 m Area: about 364,000 km 2 2

Used data Input wind field: ECMWF ERA-Interim Time resolution: 6 hourly Spatial resolution: 0.125º×0.125º from 1979 to 2013 (35 years) Used Numerical model: SWAN (version 40.91) Wave: 1) Altimeter satellite (TOPEX, GFO-1, …) 2) Buoy data 3 ID Location Water depth (m) Timeline of measurements LongLat Offshore51.5137.877002006/10/11 – 2007/5/2 Anzali49.4537.5222.52011/3/7 – 2011/11/6

Result and discussion Modelling results against the observations at Offshore buoy for December, 2006 4

Result and discussion Modelling results against the observations at TOPEX satellite 5

Conclusion All of the error measures are in a favourite range. The average error for H S is less than that of T P. SWAN model slightly under-predicts T P comparison of the results with satellite data also shows that the model can appropriately simulate wave height trend in the whole area of the Caspian Sea. 6
