18 Let’s get to know how English developed and how it is spoken in the world.

19 During the 5th century AD, English was based more on German. However, English has changed over time because cultures meet and communicate with each other. Between about AD 800 and 1150, English was influenced by Danish and French. These new settlers enriched English and especially its vocabulary. So by the 1600’s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before.

20 In 1620, some British settlers moved to America. Later in the 18th century, British colonized Australia. From 1765 to 1947 English was spoken in India. Finally by the 19th century English was settled. Now more and more people begin to learn English, including Chinese. Maybe Chinese English will develop its own identity ( 身份 ) in the future. Only time will tell.
