1
3.2.6 the concept of sustainable development LO Its difficult to define
2
First Look at the exam paper Tick the questions you think you could get full marks for
3
Definitions First used in 1987 in Our Common Future (Brundtland Report) ‘development that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ Economists ‘a stable annual return on investment regardless of the environmental impact’ Environmentalists ‘a stable return without environmental degradation’ ESS course ‘living, within the means of nature, on the “interest” or sustainable income generated by natural capital’
4
Look at the definitions again... What do they have in common? What is different? Which do you think is best and why?
5
3.2.7 SUSTAINABLY YIELD AND ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTS Guess!...it involves maths
6
A process of deduction Which of these do YOU think would calculate sustainable yield:
7
There is another way SY= (annual growth + recruitment) – (annual death + emigration) In the Mkumanzi game reserve in Tanzania where hunting is allowed the population of elephants is 750. Over a year 60 births and 55 deaths are recorded. In the same year 10 young bulls left the reserve whilst 15 new elephants immigrated. a.Calculate the sustainable yield b.If 8 elephants are killed for trophies each year, is it sustainable hunting?
8
Now go turn to page 324 And calculate the ecological footprint of India (‘to do’ box) Answers!
9
recap Rearrange yourselves to get the definitions of: SUSTAINABLE CARRYING CAPACITY Write the equations for SY (BOTH of them!) SY= (annual growth + immigration) – (annual death + emigration) Now write definitions for sustainable and carrying capacity... I know...
10
living, within the means of nature, on the “interest” or sustainable income generated by natural capital

Reading and HW Read through from page 192 to the end of page 196 (take notes if you want to) Look at the key words on page 198, and make sure you find the explanations for any you are not sure of. Now look again at the exam paper...tick the questions you think you could do now As a table...discuss the ones you think you cannot do...ask me if you need to! Now lets go to D1!!! Read about changing views towards sustainability and economic growth- starting points Rio Earth Summit (1992), The summits since Agenda 21 ‘Those who do not read are no better off than those who cannot read’ Mark Twain (and Ms Radford!)
