RamRack Conceptual Design Review Colorado State University Zach Glueckert Christopher Reed Timothy Schneider Brendan Sheridan Christina Watanuki Advisor: Dr. Azer Yalin October 28, 2008 RockSat 2008-2009

Objective : To develop a sounding rocket payload to act as a power bus, data logger, and mounting structure for future scientific payloads Overview : Power bus will be programmable to provide varying voltage supplies depending on need Data logger will provide a broad range of low level sensor communication and will contain several redundant systems Design will incorporate several permanent sensors that can be used to monitor conditions of this and future flights Success Criteria : On this initial flight sensor data will provide data on conditions in the immediate region of the payload as well as to determine the ductility of the frame under stresses Benefits : This information will be used to create constraints on future experimental payloads Overview

Design Parts –Mounting Frame Provides structural support for scientific payload and power and control modules. Sufficient stiffness for a full can future payload. –Battery Packs –Electronics Redundant 16 channel A/D 16 bit conversion and dual serial input with data logging capabilities. 4 GB storage available on MiniSD card. Real-time system monitoring and control.

Mounting Frame

Batteries Tenergy Li-Ion –7.4V –22000 mAh –3.2oz –2.63” x 1.45” x 0.7”

Electronics ATmega 2561 –Data logging –General I/O Atmega 168 –System Control –System Monitor uALFAT-TF –SD card interface CD74HC4067 –16-Channel Analog Multiplexer

RockSat 2008-2009 RockSat Payload Canister User Guide Compliance –Mass: Estimated use: 2.5lbs Allotted: 2.5lbs – Volume: Estimated use: 9” x 2” Allotted: 9” x 2” – Payload activation G-switch – no voltage running prior to launch. On launch, G-switch activates latching relay to power electronic systems. – Rocket Interface Complies with no-volt shorting wire setup.

Logistics We have contacted the other Colorado schools to plan a meeting. Looking at the week of November 3 rd through the 7 th.

Budget

Conclusions:  Concerns  Shared canister integration  How to mount three different payloads together  Center of mass/volume with other schools  Mass and volume constraints  Is there any data available on vibrations during two stage rocket launch?  Closing Remarks  Well rounded team  Have the mechanical, electrical and computer backgrounds required to meet project goals  This is a great way to set up CSU for future involvement in RockSAT
