Teaching Point: “To analyze how water moves around the world.” Do now Discussion: We have all learned about the water cycle before. Which part do you think is the most important for life?
2
1a. Evaporation- the sun heats up liquid water and turns it into water vapor. 1b. Transpiration- when the water in trees and plants evaporates into the atmosphere TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.” From a Liquid to a Gas
3
2. Condensation- when air saturated with water vapor (gas) becomes a liquid forming clouds. From a Gas to a Liquid TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”
4
3. Precipitation- any water falling from the atmosphere (rain, snow, hail, or sleet) Water Falling Back to Earth TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”
5
4a. Infiltration- the absorption of water in the soil becoming groundwater 4b. Runoff- the movement of water along the surface of the Earth. Water Back Into the Earth TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”
6
5. Collection- runoff from rivers eventually gathers to points of lower elevation, typically in oceans and lakes. Water Collects in the Oceans TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”

Mid-Lesson Assessments Take out your own Plicker Card. You should all have a number assigned to you. When you see the answer you think is correct, turn your card so the multiple choice answer letter of your choice is facing up Wait until the entire class is done, and do not change your answer based on others! TP: “To interpret a weather station model.”
9
Mid-Lesson Assessment 1.Which of the following processes below returns water to the atmosphere? a. evaporation b. precipitation c. infiltration d. runoff TP: “To analyze how water moves around the world.”
10
Mid-Lesson Assessment 2.Which process in the water cycle is directly responsible for cloud formation? a. condensation b. infiltration c. precipitation d. evaporation TP: “To analyze how water moves around the world.”
11
Intellectual Engagement Describe how life on Earth might be different if any one part of the water cycle did not occur. Give the part of the water cycle you want to stop and then explain the impact. TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”
12
Instructions: Using what we just learned about the water cycle… Task A- create flow chart showing the five parts of the water cycle. Task B- create a flow chart showing the five parts of the water cycle, and use your prior knowledge to reveal where on Earth each part of the water cycle might occur. Task C- create a detailed model showing each part of the water cycle as it might occur in the real world. Flexible Group- obtain your portfolios and meet with me in the back of the room. Class Activity- Water Cycle TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”
13
Lesson Summary In your tables of four, go back into your notes and consider what we have just learned today, and then… 1. Identify three (3) important concepts we learned today 2. Place those the three in order from the most important concept to least important. TP: “To analyze how water traverses around the world.”
