3 The challenge of deferred maintenance Median age of buildings: 53 years APPA rating of The Citadel’s 73 buildings: o 5 are in “Good” condition (7%) o 3 are in “Fair” condition (4%) o 65 are in “Poor” condition (89%) Average annual growth of Deferred Maintenance: $3.7 million Total Deferred Maintenance: $110,238,152 3

4 Deferred Maintenance and capital renewal What can we do? 1.Begin to budget annually for a systematic reduction in Deferred Maintenance 2.Seek grants, gifts, or other external resources (TCF) for DM backlog reduction 3.Borrow funds/issue bonds for all or some portion of the Deferred Maintenance work 4.Potentially close/consolidate some buildings or programs We must fund Deferred Maintenance at approx. 6% annually to just break even.
