Rainbow Class Makes Grandmas Cottage

This is going to need an awful lot of boxes!

Making wallpaper We used the computer to draw our designs, then copied and pasted once we’d made a row.

This will do nicely! We kept the patterns small and bright so they’d show up well once the walls were lined.

Careful cutting and measuring.

Made to measure We measured and cut accurately to line the insides of the boxes. Lots of maths skills used.

Getting by with help from friends. Two pairs of hands were better for the fiddly bits.

Grandma should like this! Three sides were papered, leaving one wall ready for the windows.

There is no alternative… Thatching took time and patience

No gold needed! At least we are not being asked to spin this into gold…….

Pocket Springs We thought Grandma deserved something better than a box to sleep on. The soft side of a scouring sponge!!

Duvet or not duvet!!

We worked flat out with the thatching!!

Roofing contractors! The “you tube” solution to making the roof stay on!!!!

A spot of interior design. We decided Grandma should have a rug on the floor. We measured lengths of wool and threaded it through binka. What concentration!!

Still threading! Thank goodness it is just a rug and not a carpet!!!

This kept ‘em quiet!!!!

Art straws for art straws sake! We found it much easier to “thatch” using art straws which could then be painted ochre to look like straw.

Mod Rockers! Mrs B seems to remember it being FAR more messy than it looks here. This was hugely enjoyable ……………. For the pupils!!!!!!!

Precision Plastering No - the table got much more messy than this!!!!!! This looks far too tidy.

Mesmerising modroc… This was one of the most desirable workstations- except for the adults!!!

Voluntary Homework!! Nicholas and Florence were so inspired they made things at home for the project.

We’re nearly there Good thing these are almost finished- we’re running out of space to store all the components! We hope to finish by next week but thought you would enjoy seeing work done so far…

Doors and windows Although it wont open, this looked pretty realistic and ‘cottagy’. The split pin made a great door knob.

Double glazing Connor found that one piece of acetate, placed across the inside, made two windows at once!

Interior design Once the children started thinking what grandma would like inside, the possibilities were endless! But all the children made a bed and a rug for starters.

Through the keyhole Wheuw would live in a cottage loik thiis?

Wont Grandma be pleased! A character ‘des res’ we think you’ll agree. Florence would like to shrink to get inside!

Property slump There is no slow down in the housing market in Rainbow class!!

A moment of quiet concentration Nice to find a quiet corner to get something ‘just right’.

Village People All different, all decorated, every one a ‘one off’ - And the cottages too! The smiles show how delighted the children are with their work. Another 17 are nearing completion!

And now for the valuations! Thomas (far right) doubts James is destined for a career as an Estate Agent. We think you can spot James!!

And Luke is STILL waiting for glue to dry….. “Next time, I’m using sellotape….”
