Foothills HOFCC3 What is Baptism? Christian Meaning An outward sign of an inward regeneration Public pointer to personal death and rebirth Sinful nature is put to death (drowned), new life in Christ begins (emerge from water) Participate in Christ’s resurrection Illustration from marriage Rom. 6:3 through Rom. 6:7 (NIV) 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Foothills HOFCC4 What is Baptism? Apostolic History (Eunuch, Cornelius, Jailer) Acts 8:34 through Acts 8:39 (NIV) 34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Acts 10:44 through Acts 10:48 (NIV) 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues £ and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. Acts 16:25 through Acts 16:33 (NIV) 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. Foothills HOFCC6 What is Baptism? John Calvin By these words (Ro6:3-5) He not only exhorts us to follow Christ as if He had said that we are admonished through baptism to die to our desires by the example of Christ’s death, and to be aroused to righteousness by the example of His resurrection, but He also takes hold of something far higher; namely, that through baptism Christ makes us sharers in his death, that we may be engrafted in it. And, just as the twig draws substance and nourishment from the root to which it is grafted, so those who receive baptism with right faith truly feel the effective working of Christ’s death in the mortification of their flesh, together with the working of His resurrection in the vivification of the Spirit.

Foothills HOFCC7 Why Baptism? Because Jesus … … was baptized … had the apostles baptize new Christians … commanded us to do it! (Great Commission) … has answered you in prayer to confirm timing Matt. 3:16 through Matt. 3:17 (NIV) 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Acts 2:38, 2:41 (NIV) 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Acts 2:38, 2:41 (NIV) 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Matt. 28:19 (NIV) 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in £ the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

Foothills HOFCC8 Who Can Be Baptized? Anyone who … … recognizes their own sinful nature and repents (literally, “turns around”) … believes that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah) with authority to rule and who brings us into a right relationship with God … is saved (proclaims that Jesus is Lord and believes that God resurrected Him) Matt. 3:11 (NIV) 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Acts 8:12 (NIV) 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Rom. 10:9 (NIV) 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Foothills HOFCC11 What Happens AFTER a Baptism? Life Changes The Holy Spirit will be present and some may manifest His Gifts (baptism/seal of the Holy Spirit) Jesus will acknowledge you before the Father Matt. 10:32 (NIV) 32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. Acts 1:5 (NIV) 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 (NIV) 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Eph. 1:13 through Eph. 1:15 (NIV) 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
12
Foothills HOFCC12 What Happens AFTER a Baptism? Life Changes You will feel different (maybe not much at first, but eventually) You will act different … with Jesus as your King, your behavior changes Your faith is strengthened since you will remember your baptism your whole life You will know your church community better You may suffer as a result of identifying with Our Lord Jesus Christ Gal. 3:26 through Gal. 3:27 (NIV) 26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Mark 10:38 (NIV) 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”
13
Foothills HOFCC13 What Happens AFTER a Baptism? Life Becomes “Death to Self” You start denying yourself (your desires) to satisfy others (their desires) And the future reward is Eternal Life! Phil. 2:3-4 (NIV) 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Luke 9:24 (NIV) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. Mt. 16:24 (NIV) 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. John 12:24 (NIV) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 1 Thess 4:16-17 (NIV) 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
