2. LITERATURE REVIEW: The reason why southern states dominate the “most dependent” category is historical. During the many decades in the 20th century when the South was solidly Democratic, its congressional representatives in both the House and the Senate, came to hold leadership positions on powerful committees, which they used to send federal dollars back to their home states in the form of contracts, projects, installations (Viswanathan). The reddest states are, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, Maine. All have exceptionally high poverty rates and thus receive disproportionately large shares of federal dollars. (Tierney). Through a variety of social programs, the federal government disburses hundreds of billions of dollars each year to maintain a “safety net” intended to help the neediest among us (Tierney).

LITERATURE REVIEW CONT’D Republican-dominated states — are the most dependent on federal spending, while returning the least to Washington in the way of tax dollars. in the most conservative states it is seen as a political boon to turn down federal handouts. In essence, they are trying to become less taker-y (Hallman). Don’t judge a state by its color. There are numerous complexities that underlie statistics, and these complexities must be explored in order to make informed opinions. Example- State Income Tax Rate, State Tax Revenue, States government spending per capita, States budget solvency (Camp).

14. CONCLUSION: Democratic (Blue) States are least dependent on the Federal Government. 8 out of the 10 most dependent states are Republican (Red). Mississippi(1), Alabama(3), Louisiana(4), Tennessee(5), South Dakota(7), Kentucky(8), West Virginia(9), and Missouri(10). 4 out of the 5 least dependent states are Democratic (Blue) States. New Jersey(1), Delaware(2), Illinois(3), and Minnesota(4). Another way in which you can obtain better statistics on which states are most dependent on the federal government is by looking at how much a money a state gets back for every dollar they pay in federal income tax, States government spending per capita, and State Tax Revenue.
