Environmental Science Chapter 1.1 7 th Grade
2
Ecology: Study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment. Two Groups: 1. Biotic: All LIVING organisms that live together in an environment. 2. Abiotic: NONLIVING factors, such as water, soil, light, and temperature.
3
BIOTICABIOTIC BIOTIC: All LIVING things that live together in an environment. ABIOTIC: All NONLIVING factors such as water, soil, light, and temperature.
4
List the biotic parts and abiotic parts in the picture below:
5
1. Biosphere 2. Ecosystem 3. Community 4. Population 5. Organism
6
Organism: an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.
7
Population: A group of organisms of the SAME species that live together.
8
Community: A group of organisms living in the same place and sharing the same characteristics. What do all of these organisms share in common?
9
Ecosystem: made up of a community of organisms and the abiotic environment of the community. An ecologist studying the ecosystem could examine how organisms interact as well as how temperature, precipitation, and soil affects the organisms.
10
Biosphere: part of Earth where life exists. Extends from deepest parts of ocean to high in the air where plant spores drift. Ecologists study the biosphere to see how organisms interact with the abiotic environment – Earth’s atmosphere, water, soil, and rock.
