Instrument Control Systems Seminar 2014, 20 th -24 th October 2014 New Standards VLT Control HW System
2
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Outlook Introduction Obsolescence management New HW standards What has changed What has not changed Compliance Engineering Summary
3
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Obsolescence management strategy (1) Actual VLT HW based on VME boards VME bus is an international standard but ! Huge coupling between HW and SW Typical example MACCON board SW drivers build around the board (MCM) Difficult to replace virtualization
4
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Obsolescence management strategy (2) So what can we do to avoid those problems? Interfaces with upper level based on Ethernet Interface with HW world based on industrial stds 0-24V, ±10V, RS485, etc Drivers development on provider side Based on open stds (OPC-UA, PlcOpen, etc) Obsolescence is now handled at function level and not anymore at board level
5
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 New HW standards What has changed Due to the diversity of requirements we have selected two different solutions based on PLC. ICS application BECKHOFF world Safety and Cryo Applications SIEMENS Time system moved to IEEE1588 Already available at Paranal Fully deployed on UT2 (other UT on demand) Technical CCD moved to GigE vision Ethernet This is true only for instruments not for UTs
6
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 New HW standards What has not changed (1) Cabinets has still to be cooled (~±1.5 deg) PLC means different cooling problems Less power but still enough to for problems Embedded in smaller cabinets (more cabs) Need to duplicate the cooling infrastructure Not a bad idea to reduce the cabinets number !
7
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 New HW standards What has not changed (1) Available HVAC controllers for cabinets ESO 1HE cooling Unit Alternative PLC base HVAC (small cabinets) Recommended 1HE, but PLC based allowed We have to be and will be pragmatic !!!! What does matter is coherence
8
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 New HW standards What has not changed (2) Cabinets have still to be wired properly Cabinet connections are more complex/dense Touch panels to be accessible (front Panel) Cables entrance to cabinet (EMC) Power management and safety
9
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 New HW standards What has not changed (3) PLC specific cabling problems What we don’t want to see at all !!!
10
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Compliance Engineering All Electronic equipment must be compliant with EU legislation Reference general document for design: GEN-SPE-ESO-50000-5401 Issue 3
11
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Compliance Engineering (1) New VLT Electronic design document Under verification/signature Available end of October Provides implementation examples Product and system design rules Architectural deployment example for PLC List of recommended HW material
12
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Compliance Engineering (2) What can we do to help you?
13
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Compliance Engineering (3) Architectural view
14
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Compliance Engineering (4) List of recommended PLC Modules doc Under signature too (available end of the week)
15
Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Summary Moving to PLC allows more flexibility Easier obsolescence management BUT: Cabling, cooling, interconnections still needs care EMC and CE compliancy can be a real issue Mitigation Schematics examples available List of recommended modules available Collaborative work with ESO
