3 Scope of UK Activity Goal – The goal of WP4 is to finalize and validate the emerging stave core design and to establish the UK groups as having the skills and resources to constitute a major stave-building and module mounting centre for the build-phase of the ATLAS tracker upgrade. Deliverables – The main deliverables from this programme are a number of single and double-sided stavelet and full stave cores populated with thermal and full electrical modules to advance the development and performance verification of the stave core design. – The manufacturing procedures and test methods will be fully documented and form the basis of an initial set of formal stave assembly and QA procedures in the first phase of the construction programme. 22/04/20133ATLAS Tracker Upgrade Kick-off Meeting

12 How the UK work fits into the international programme #1 Tapes – Responsibility for bus tape electrical layout (with WP3) – Low mass screen manufacturing capability (if screen required) – Future programme: Tapes for prototype thermo-mechanical and electrical staves (stavelets) Stave Core Development – Bulk of (active) technical resources within UK – UK-proposed titanium + orbital welding now adopted as baseline – UK-proposed single-edge mounting & locking now adopted as baseline – UK-proposed side-mounted EOS now adopted as baseline – Future programme: Defining final stave core geometry, optimising stave core thermal design & improving stave manufacture 22/04/201312ATLAS Tracker Upgrade Kick-off Meeting

13 How the UK work fits into the international programme #2 Module Mounting – UK-developed tooling is the only mass-manufacture, high accuracy module mounting system for ATLAS staves. – Current system (will be) used for Stave 250 – Future programme: Gain experience with RAL system on stave 250/130, establish feasibility of CMM-based system at Liverpool. Review in 3 rd year. Stave Core QA – New task aimed at bringing together all aspects of Stave QA. – Procedures & test systems required by other tasks to demonstrate functional performance – Development of QA procedures in collaboration with other teams. Production Preparation – Task has been severely de-scoped in cost-cutting to arrive at funded programme. – Focus is on defining understanding how the UK share of stave cores would be manufactured and itemising the infrastructure and estimating the effort required. 22/04/201313ATLAS Tracker Upgrade Kick-off Meeting

14 Meetings Traditionally... – Weekly ‘phone meeting at 10am on Monday – Face-to-face meetings at 4-6 week intervals Issues moving forward... – How to link with other WPs WP4 (shared pre-preg, foam, cooling tube, etc..) WP3 (stave electrical architecture, modules) WP5 (test systems, stave electrical QA, system test results evaluation) WP6 (Stave mechanical & services interfaces, sub-system assembly and test) – My proposal Keep weekly WP4 ‘phone meetings Keep frequency of F2F meetings but maybe alternate between – Strip Mechanics (WP4, WP6) – Strip staves (WP3, WP4, WP5, WP6) 22/04/201314ATLAS Tracker Upgrade Kick-off Meeting
