Chapter 1 - Learning Outcomes By the end of this chapter, you should be able to: OCR PE for AS Chapter 1 - Learning Outcomes Name the major bones and muscles of the body. Describe the structure of a synovial joint and explain the function of its features. Describe the movement patterns that can occur at synovial joints, using examples from a range of sporting activities. Describe the different types of muscle contraction, using examples from a range of sporting activities. Distinguish between the structure and function of the three types of skeletal muscle fibre in the body. Show how an individual’s mix of muscle fibre type might impact on their reasons for choosing to take part in a particular type of physical activity. OCR PE for AS Chapter 1 - Learning Outcomes Explain the effect of a warm-up and a cool-down on skeletal muscle tissue, in relation to the quality of performance of physical activity. Identify and explain the three types of motion, giving examples of each from sporting activity. Apply all three of Newton’s Laws of Motion to a range of sporting examples. Explain the effect that the size of force, direction of force and the point of application of force has on a body in a sporting environment. Define the term ‘centre of mass’ (COM) and show how changes in the position of the centre of mass can affect the stability of a body, using examples from sport. Critically evaluate the impact of different types of physical activity on the skeletal and muscular systems. OCR PE for AS Dynamic Learning Network Edition © Hodder Education 2008
