You have been asked to set up a friends computer to the internet. Task- Using the internet – collect information and create a document that will explain what is required to connect you friends computer to the internet. Provide pictures to help illustrate the set up. Hint – make sure you have checked their computer for its suitability to connect !! 20 mins

Connecting to the internet To connect to the Internet the following are needed: a computer (with wireless card) telephone line (cable being the exception) modem and/or router an ISP (Internet Service Provider) Web browser, eg Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera etc.

Using the inter- network (Internet) Name as many as possible things, the internet can be used for ? Looking for information Online banking Email Watching videos Playing games Shopping Social media – Facebook, Twitter Downloading images

Accessing the WWW What is a Browser? A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. What is a Search Engine ? A search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. https – indicates it is a ____________website ? Secure

WWW This bit tells your browser that it is looking for a web page – nowadays it’s enough just to write ‘www.bbc.co.uk’. bbc.co.uk is the domain. This is the name of the computer which stores the file containing the web page. /index.shtml is the name of the fi le containing the web page. Web addresses do not always have this part.

Collecting information You will save a great deal of time if you plan out what information you need to gather before you start looking for on the Internet. Task – In a group, discuss as many things you will need to consider when looking for information. Try and think of at least 3 things and why they are important. 5 mins

Collecting information What am I going to do with the information? How much information do I need? Who is my audience? Do I know any likely sources? What format do I need the information in? Text, numbers, audio, still or moving images?
